We knit this brown floral maxi in a fluid stretch yarn that moves easily and keeps its shape. The bodice cuts into an open V-neckline with a wrap front, meeting a flexible smocked waist that gives way to a long skirt. Deep side pockets sit right at the seam.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Wrap neckline. The front crosses over into an open V-neck that lies flat against the collarbone. It stays in place through movement without pulling at the shoulders.
  • Smocked waist. Elasticated smocking runs through the midsection to anchor the top half while the knit below releases into a full, floor-skimming skirt with built-in side pockets.
  • Stretch jersey hand. We use a smooth polyester and spandex knit for both the shell and lining. The fabric has natural give, resists creasing, and recovers cleanly after wear.
  • Cold wash care. Machine wash cold inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the smocking and the print. Skip the tumble dryer and lay the dress flat on a towel to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
