We cut this maxi from a fluid stretch knit printed with an all-over floral pattern. The wrap front creates an open V-neckline, while the smocked waist gives ease through the middle. It sits close against the torso before dropping to a long hem near the ankle.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Wrap front and neckline. The front panels cross over to form an open V-neckline. It sits flat against the chest, and the sleeveless cut leaves the arms free for layering under light jackets or wraps.
  • Smocked waist band. A wide band of smocking gathers the knit through the waistline. It stretches easily as you move and pulls the skirt into soft, vertical gathers that run down to the ankle.
  • Side seam pockets. We built functional pockets directly into the side seams. They sit flat against the hips when empty, giving you space for small essentials without disrupting the line of the skirt.
  • Burgundy knit care. Machine wash cold with like colours, ideally inside a laundry bag to protect the fine stretch stitches. Lay it flat to dry instead of using the dryer, and skip the iron entirely.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
