What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neck and sleeves. A banded crew neck sits flat against the collarbone. The three quarter sleeves carry subtle volume through the arm and finish with a clean turned hem rather than tight ribbing.
  • Roomy top block. The top hangs away from the torso and finishes around the hip. It gives you space through the chest and waist without pulling when you sit.
  • Elastic waist trousers. The pants pull on with an encased elastic waistband that lies flat. The legs drop straight down from the hip, keeping the fabric off the skin through the thigh and calf.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cool water or dry clean. Lay both pieces flat on a towel to dry so the knit retains its original shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
