What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neckline and knit. The plain round crew neck is framed by a tidy ribbed band that keeps its shape. We use a balanced rib stitch across both pieces, giving the nutmeg knit steady stretch and a soft, uniform surface.
  • Sleeve and cropped hem. Long sleeves finish in neat cuffs that sit close at the wrist without pinching. The top hem lands cropped, resting naturally above the waistline of the matching bottom piece.
  • Straight leg cut. The knit trousers fall in a straight line from the waist down through the leg, avoiding excess volume while leaving room through the calf. The ribbing runs vertically to give the fabric a clean vertical drop.
  • Washing and care. Hand wash this set in cool water with a mild knitwear detergent, or dry clean it when needed. Press out excess water in a clean towel and dry both pieces flat to maintain the shape of the ribbing.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
