What we would tell you in the studio

  • Lace trimmed neckline. The deep V-neckline is bordered with a flat panel of lace that rests flush against the collarbone. Because the cut is broad and open, the neckline stays clear of the throat and lays flat without pulling.
  • Ribbed body drape. Fine vertical ribs run the full length of the body, giving the fabric a light give that recovers its shape. The body hangs loose rather than clinging, leaving plenty of room through the waist.
  • Cropped lower edge. The hem is cut short, ending above the standard hip line so it sits naturally over high-waisted denim or trousers. Leaving it untucked keeps the clean horizontal edge visible without bunching fabric around the seat.
  • Gentle wash care. Turn the shirt inside out before washing to protect the open lace border from snagging on hooks or buttons. Wash on a cold cycle in a mesh laundry bag, then dry flat on a towel.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
