What we would tell you in the studio

  • Resin shoulder buttons. Small resin buttons line the top of each shoulder. They sit flat against the seam, adding weight and a solid detail to an otherwise clean crewneck line.
  • Fine rib knit. The vertical ribbing gives the yarn natural lateral stretch while keeping its shape through wear. It hangs away from the torso rather than pulling tight against the skin.
  • Sleeve and hem finish. Matching ribbed bands finish the cuffs and the bottom hem. The cuffs stay put when pushed up the forearm, and the hem edge remains flat instead of curling.
  • Care and layering. This fine gauge layers smoothly under open cardigans or jackets without adding bulk. Hand wash or run on a gentle cycle in cold water, then lay flat to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
