We cut this tunic loose so it hangs away from the torso rather than clinging. The body is a brushed mid-weight knit, framed with ribbed sleeves and an overlapping V-neckline secured with decorative buttons. It lands around the hips with side slits to keep the hem moving freely.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crossed V-neck. The collar lines cross over at the base of the throat, trimmed with small wooden-look buttons that sit flat against the chest. The opening stays open without gaping wide.
  • Contrast ribbed sleeves. We knit the body smooth and brushed, then switch to a narrow vertical rib along the arms. The sleeve narrows down to the wrist so it pushes up easily without sliding back down.
  • Curved high-low hem. The lower edge curves slightly lower in back, split by open side vents. That slit lets the tunic sit over trousers or leggings without catching across the seat.
  • Care and washing. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle and tumble dry on low heat. Laying it flat to dry will preserve the brushed surface and keep the decorative buttons secure.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
