What we would tell you in the studio

  • Neckline and button detail. The front neckline crosses over into an open V-shape, secured with small decorative wooden-look buttons along the overlap. It leaves the collarbone bare and sits flat without bunching under a coat or heavier jacket.
  • Sleeve and shoulder drop. The long sleeves are worked in a contrasting ribbed stitch that grips the forearm while stretching easily over skin. Low dropped shoulders give the upper body extra room to move without pulling at the neck.
  • Curved high-low hem. The bottom hem lands around the hip line with a slight dip in back and shallow side slits. That cut lets the fabric drape straight down when worn loose, or fold neatly when tucked into denim.
  • Care for brushed knits. Turn the garment inside out before running it through a cold machine cycle. Tumble dry on a low setting or lay it flat on a dry towel to preserve the brushed texture of the yarn.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
