What we would tell you in the studio

  • Close knit construction. A flexible synthetic yarn gives the fabric generous stretch that recovers its shape. It sits close through the torso and skirt without feeling stiff or heavy against the skin.
  • Neckline and sleeves. The high crew neck band lies flat at the base of the throat. Full-length sleeves extend to the wrists, cut slim so they sit neatly inside jacket cuffs without bunching.
  • Long column hem. The skirt drops straight past the knee toward the ankle. Because the knit has natural give, the lower hem allows for an unhindered stride while keeping a clean vertical line.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle or dry clean. Lay the dress flat to dry on a towel so the weight of the damp yarn does not pull the shape out of line.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
