What we would tell you in the studio
- Pique knit body. The textured knit gives the black yarn body and weight without feeling stiff. It holds a boxy shape off the torso while remaining pliable through movement, resting smoothly over light underlayers or bare skin without scratchiness.
- Raglan sleeve cut. Diagonal seams run from the underarm straight to the collar band. This construction removes traditional shoulder points, allowing the long sleeves to drape freely down the arm into narrow, neat cuffs at the wrists.
- Short straight hem. The hem is cut short to meet the waistband of mid or high-rise trousers without excess bulk. It hangs straight across the hips, leaving the roomier upper half of the pullover free to move.
- Care and washing. Hand wash cold or use a gentle machine cycle with mild detergent to preserve the textured stitch. Lay the piece flat on a towel away from direct heat to dry so the short hem maintains its rectangular shape.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
