We shaped this black outerwear piece with a generous body that hangs away from the frame. The longline cut falls toward the knee, leaving space underneath for thick winter knits or light base layers. Broad lapels frame the open front, finished with deep pockets set into the side seams.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Roomy double-breasted cut. The body is cut wide and straight so it layers over chunky pullovers without pulling. It fastens double-breasted across the chest or hangs open with a clean vertical fall.
  • Wide open lapel. Broad notched lapels create a structured frame at the chest. The collar lies flat against the shoulders and stays in place when worn over turtlenecks or crewnecks.
  • Straight long sleeves. The sleeves run straight from shoulder to cuff with enough ease to slide over knit wrists. They finish cleanly at the hand without tight ribbing.
  • Side pocket construction. We placed functional slip pockets directly into the side construction. They sit flat against the hip line to keep the outer profile smooth while holding small carry items.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
