What we would tell you in the studio

  • Cut and profile. The body hangs away from the waist and drops straight down to the knee. This open cut gives you space to wear thick layers beneath without the wool pulling across your back.
  • Lapels and closure. Broad notched lapels fold flat across the chest when worn open. Double breasted buttons let you fasten the front securely on windy mornings to block out drafts.
  • Sleeve and pockets. Long set-in sleeves finish cleanly at the wrists with enough width to accommodate ribbed cuffs underneath. Two deep side pockets sit flat along the front seams to hold small items.
  • Care and maintenance. Brush the wool surface gently with a soft clothes brush to remove dust after wear. Spot clean small marks with cold water and press with a damp cloth on low heat.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
