What we would tell you in the studio

  • Square neck and straps. A low square neckline leaves the collarbones clear. The wide straps carry small gathered ruffles along each edge that rest flat over the shoulders.
  • Smocked bodice. Elastic thread runs through the chest in dense, parallel rows. It stretches over the body to anchor the top, keeping the gathers set without pulling.
  • Cropped peplum hem. Below the smocking, the knit gathers into an open skirt. It sits roomy and finishes short, landing right near the high waistband of trousers or shorts.
  • Launder and care. Wash cold on a gentle cycle inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the ruffled edges. Lay flat to dry away from direct heat so the elastic retains its grip.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
