What we would tell you in the studio

  • Smocked bodice construction. Elastic gathers run through the chest section to hold the knit close before releasing at the high waist. This tension keeps the square neckline square without pulling on the shoulder straps.
  • Ruffle shoulder straps. The straps are cut wide enough to cover undergarment lines and finished with small ruffled edges. They anchor the open neckline so the front stays flat against the chest.
  • Gathered peplum hem. Below the smocking, the knit flares out into an ungathered, roomy lower section. The hem falls short, resting near the top of high-rise denim or linen shorts.
  • Cold wash care. Machine wash cold inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the smocked stitching from snagging. Lay the top flat to dry so the elastic threads keep their recovery over time.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
