What we would tell you in the studio

  • Smocked bodice. The chest features elastic smocking that gathers the knit close to the torso while maintaining easy horizontal give. It anchors the top securely so the lower body can spread out and move freely without pulling.
  • Ruffled straps. Wide shoulder straps are trimmed with ruffled knit edges along both sides. They frame an open square neckline at the front and back, sitting flat against the skin without digging in during warm days.
  • Cropped peplum hem. Below the smocked section, the fabric releases into a loose, gathered tier that finishes at a cropped length. It floats away from high-waisted denim or linen shorts rather than clinging to the hips.
  • Gentle laundry care. Wash cold on a gentle cycle inside a mesh bag to protect the ruffles and smocking threads from snagging. Avoid high dryer heat, and lay the knit flat to dry so the floral print and shape hold up.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
