What we would tell you in the studio
- Chunky gauge knit. The heavy knit gives the body enough weight to fall straight rather than cling. It holds warmth well through cold weather and keeps its shape across a full day of wear.
- Mock neck and cuffs. We used wide ribbing at the neck to keep the collar standing on its own. The same ribbing extends from the forearm down to the wrist, gathering the volume of the batwing sleeve.
- Dropped batwing sleeve. The sleeve seam sits low off the shoulder, creating extra room through the chest and upper arm. As the arm drops, the fabric folds naturally against your side.
- Wash and flat dry. Hand wash in cold water or run a gentle wool cycle inside a mesh laundry bag. Squeeze out the water without twisting the knit, then dry it flat on a towel.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
