What we would tell you in the studio

  • Neckline and shoulders. The mock collar sits close to the base of the throat in a sturdy vertical rib. Low dropped shoulders ease the line across the upper body and blend directly into the deep armholes.
  • Batwing sleeve construction. Each sleeve starts wide at the shoulder seam and runs loose through the upper arm. Long ribbed cuffs pull the knit close from wrist to elbow, keeping the excess fabric gathered above your hands.
  • Chunky yarn weight. The knit uses a thick, plush yarn worked in a dense stitch to block drafts. It has substantial weight in hand, which pulls the oversized body downward into clean, straight folds.
  • Care for heavy knits. Hand wash in cold water using a mild detergent and press out excess moisture between clean towels without wringing. Lay the sweater flat across a drying rack to protect the weight of the wet yarn.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
