What we would tell you in the studio

  • Knitted stripe structure. The horizontal stripes are worked directly into the gauge for a smooth surface. It gives the fabric a balanced four-way stretch that recovers its shape after sitting or walking.
  • Crew neckline and sleeves. A plain round crew sits flat against the collarbone without pulling. The long sleeves follow a relaxed line down the arm, leaving plenty of room around the shoulders and wrists.
  • Roomy proportions. Both pieces share a wide, loose cut that drops straight down rather than tapering in. The hem falls long toward the ankle, keeping the silhouette open and easy.
  • Washing and drying flat. Turn the set inside out and wash on a cold, gentle cycle with mild detergent. Reshape both garments while damp and dry them flat on a towel to protect the stripe alignment.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
