What we would tell you in the studio
- Open front drape. The open front drops in an unfastened line framed by a wide flat band. It hangs straight down the torso without pulling across the shoulders or bunching under the arms.
- Patch pockets. Two patch pockets are knit flat and sewn directly onto the lower front panels at resting hand height. They hold small items without dragging the hem out of shape.
- Curved lower hem. The bottom edge curves gently around the base rather than cutting straight across. It rests near the hip line to keep the layer balanced over trousers or skirts.
- Washing and care. Hand wash in cool water with a mild knit detergent and press out excess moisture between towels. Lay the cardigan flat on a drying rack to keep the yarn from stretching out.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
