What we would tell you in the studio

  • Upright mock collar. The collar stands straight at the throat without needing to be turned down. It holds its shape through the day and layers easily under heavier wool coats or open jackets.
  • Lantern sleeve shape. Each sleeve widens along the forearm before narrowing into a ribbed cuff. The cuff keeps the fabric in place at your wrist so the extra volume rests comfortably along the lower arm.
  • Roomy tunic cut. The body is cut straight and wide, falling loose from the shoulders to a short hemline. You can wear it as a standalone mini dress with tall boots or over knit trousers as a long tunic.
  • Caring for the knit. Hand wash in cold water or use a gentle machine cycle inside a mesh laundry bag. Press the excess water out with a towel and lay the dress flat to dry so the hem does not stretch.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
