We knit this short dress with a generous cut that falls straight and sits away from the body. The high mock neck stands up on its own without folding, while the sleeves gather into long, banded cuffs to create a rounded lantern shape. It works on its own or pulled over tights and narrow trousers.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • High mock collar. The collar rises straight from the neckline to cover the throat without the bulk of a turned-over roll. It stays upright through a full day of wear and keeps cold drafts off your neck.
  • Lantern sleeve shape. We widen the sleeve through the forearm and gather the extra fabric back down into a neat ribbed cuff. The cuff holds at the wrist so the volume stays stacked along the arm.
  • Roomy straight cut. The body is knitted wide and hangs straight to a short hem above the knee. Because it does not pull close around the middle, it layers smoothly over leggings, slip skirts, or thick winter tights.
  • Washing and drying. Hand wash in cool water with a mild knitwear detergent, or use a gentle machine cycle inside a mesh bag. Press excess water out with a flat towel and dry it flat to protect the shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
