Sweater Dresses for Women

We knit this short sweater dress in a deep black yarn with a soft hand. The body hangs roomy and clear of the waist, ending well above the knee. A tall mock neckline and gathered lantern sleeves give the piece its shape.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Neck and shoulder line. The mock neckline stands upright without folding over, sitting close against the neck. Dropped shoulders let the sleeves fall low, leaving the upper body open and relaxed.
  • Lantern sleeve shape. The sleeves widen down the arm before gathering into fitted ribbed cuffs at the wrists. That extra yarn creates volume that holds its lantern shape throughout the day.
  • Straight short hem. Knitted straight across, the lower edge drops to a short tunic length. The weight of the knit pulls the fabric straight down so the profile stays clean when you move.
  • Washing and shape care. Wash this dress in cold water on a gentle cycle or by hand to protect the soft knit structure. Lay it flat across a drying rack so the weight does not stretch the hem.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
