What we would tell you in the studio

  • High mock collar. The neck sits close and upright without rolling down. It is knitted in a tidy rib that stays firm against the throat, keeping out cold air without feeling tight.
  • Lantern sleeve shape. Each sleeve widens through the forearm before pulling back into a snug ribbed cuff. That extra volume lets the fabric pool softly above the wrist when you move.
  • Short straight hem. The hem finishes short on the leg, balancing the wide cut through the torso and shoulders. It is bound cleanly so it hangs straight without curling up at the edge.
  • Laundering the knit. Wash this dress in cold water on a gentle cycle, preferably inside a mesh bag. Press out the excess water with a towel and lay it flat to dry so the body keeps its shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
