What we would tell you in the studio

  • Ribbed turtleneck top. The collar sits high on the neck without squeezing, folded over for double thickness. Below the neckband, the raglan shoulder seams angle down to give the upper body a relaxed, boxy shape that lands around the hip.
  • Matching wide leg trousers. We knit the pants with a generous width from thigh to hem. The waistband encases elastic and adds an adjustable drawstring so the waist stays secure without cutting in during a day of wear.
  • Yarn hand and weight. The ribbed stitch adds horizontal give while keeping enough weight to let the trousers drop straight down. It feels soft against bare skin, with enough substance to block cold drafts without feeling heavy.
  • Care for the set. Wash both pieces inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle. Reshape the top and trousers while damp and dry them flat on a towel so the ribbed knit keeps its shape and does not stretch out.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
