We knit this matching two-piece set in a soft, stretchy rib with a roomy drape that hangs away from the torso. The high neck folds close, while the dropped raglan sleeves give the shoulders plenty of room. The matching trousers have an elastic drawstring waist and fall straight to a wide leg.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Ribbed turtleneck top. The high collar stands soft against the throat without gripping tight. Dropped raglan armholes allow the long sleeves to hang freely, ending in simple turned hems that sit loose at the wrists.
  • Wide-leg knit trousers. We built the bottoms with a wide leg and an elastic waistband anchored by an adjustable drawcord. The rib knit runs vertical down the leg, giving the trousers a clean downward drape.
  • Dark apricot yarn. This shade is a muted, warm apricot with soft amber undertones. We dye the top and trousers in the same batch so the tones match across both pieces.
  • Laundering and drying. Hand wash in cool water or use a gentle cycle inside a mesh laundry bag. Lay both pieces flat on a clean towel to dry so the ribbed knit keeps its shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
