Women Dresses Spring Summer

We knit this dress in deep black with a straight column shape and an open neckline. The long sleeves sit close down the arm without pulling tight, and the hem drops past the knee to anchor the line. It sits clear of the body without billowing.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Open shaped neckline. The neckline cuts wide and open across the collarbone to leave the throat clear. It holds its shape through wear and stays flat against the chest rather than rolling inward.
  • Straight long hem. We take the body down in a clean vertical line that finishes well below the knee. The weight of the lower knit keeps the hem from riding up as you walk.
  • Full length sleeves. The sleeves run down to the wrists with a steady, even gauge. They layer neatly under coats and light jackets without bunching around the shoulders or elbows.
  • Washing and drying. Wash on a gentle cycle inside a mesh laundry bag, or wash by hand in cold water. Lay the piece flat on a towel to dry so the long hem does not stretch out of shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
