Women Dresses Spring Summer

We cut this dress with an open square neckline and a smocked bodice that gives through the chest. The long sleeves balance a skirt that drops straight past the knee, backed by a soft inner lining. It sits easy against the skin without clinging.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Smocked bodice construction. The upper body uses elastic smocking that expands and recovers as you move. It anchors the open square neckline so the collar stays flat across the chest and shoulders.
  • Lined skirt and hem. We added an inner lining through the lower body to keep the fabric opaque in daylight. The skirt drops straight from the smocking and finishes well below the knee.
  • Long sleeve balance. The full-length sleeves cover down to the wrists, offsetting the wider neck opening. The fabric holds its shape along the arm without tight cuffs pulling at the wrist.
  • Cold wash care. Machine wash this piece in a mesh laundry bag on a gentle cycle, or wash it by hand in cold water. Line dry away from direct heat to protect the smocked elastic.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
