We knit this button-front layer with a plain round crew neck and short sleeves. The body hangs loose and straight, falling down toward the hem without clinging. Spun from a brushed yarn with a soft hand, the deep burgundy knit works fastened on its own or open over lighter tops.

What we would tell you in the studio
- Crew neckline and buttons. The front closes with a neat row of buttons up to a clean crew neck. Fastening it all the way changes the piece from a loose open layer to a standalone knit top.
- Brushed yarn hand. We chose a yarn that is brushed across the surface for a soft, plush feel against bare skin. The knit holds enough body to stay off the frame without feeling heavy.
- Roomy straight drape. The body is cut wide through the torso with plenty of ease, dropping straight down from the shoulders. It layers easily over long-sleeve tees and collared shirts without bunching under the arms.
- Washing and care. Hand wash in cold water or run on a delicate cold cycle, then reshape and lay flat on a towel to dry. Storing it folded keeps the shoulders from stretching out on a hanger.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
