What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neck and side slits. A plain round crew band finishes the neck cleanly. The hem lands at the hip with open side vents so the fabric splits and sits flat over the shorts.
  • High waist pocket shorts. The shorts are cut close through the leg with a high waistband that stays put. A flat patch pocket on the side holds a key or phone without pulling down the seam.
  • Soft pink stretch knit. We dyed this yarn in a pale, clean pink. The knit has generous four-way stretch that recovers its shape after sitting, giving the fabric a light, fluid drape across the body.
  • Care and washing. Wash both pieces together in cool water on a gentle cycle so the pink shade stays matched. Reshape the top while damp and dry flat on a towel.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
