We knit this layer in a heavy gauge with plenty of built-in stretch. The front buttons all the way up into a high neck, or fastens lower to spread open. The body sits wide and loose, falling past the hips so it layers easily over tees, knit dresses, or denim.

What we would tell you in the studio
- High neck and buttons. Buttoning the front all the way up forms a tall mock neck that holds its shape. Left unbuttoned, the collar folds back against the shoulders to sit flat.
- Roomy chunky gauge. The body hangs straight and away from the torso. We used a thick yarn with give, leaving ample space through the chest and waist for heavier base layers.
- Long straight sleeves. The sleeves run full length down to the wrists. Because the shoulders drop low, the knit stacks slightly near the lower arm without pulling tight across the upper arm.
- Hand wash care. Submerge the piece in cool water with a mild detergent and press gently. Squeeze the excess water out without twisting, then dry it flat across a towel.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
