We knit this cardigan in a heavy, soft yarn with a generous amount of room through the body. Buttoned all the way up, the collar sits close as a mock neck. Left unbuttoned, the front panels drop open and clear a collared shirt or a jersey tee beneath. The white yarn shows the stitch definition cleanly.

What we would tell you in the studio
- Convertible high neckline. The front button placket runs up into a standing mock neck. Fasten every button to keep the neck covered, or undo the top few so the collar spreads flat over your shoulders.
- Chunky gauge structure. We use a heavy knit with built-in give that keeps its loft across the body. The white yarn gives each stitch clear relief, giving the sweater substantial weight without feeling stiff.
- Roomy open cut. The body is cut wide and hangs away from the torso down toward the hips. The dropped armholes and wide sleeves leave plenty of space for long-sleeve tees or light woven shirts underneath.
- Cold water care. Hand wash this cardigan in cold water to keep the chunky knit from stretching out of shape. Press excess water out between towels and dry the sweater flat on a rack.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
