We knit this brown cardigan in a heavy gauge yarn with plenty of natural stretch. The cut hangs well away from the torso, giving you space to wear woven shirts or lighter tops underneath. Fasten the buttons to close the high mock neck against cold air, or leave them undone down the front.

What we would tell you in the studio
- Chunky rib texture. The yarn has substance and weight, knitted in a thick gauge that holds its shape without feeling stiff. It gives the body a soft, springy hand that recovers after stretching.
- Convertible mock neck. A row of front buttons runs all the way up the collar. Buttoned closed, it stands as a warm mock neck; undone, the collar splits open to sit flat across the collarbone.
- Roomy sleeve shape. The sleeves run long and wide through the arm, ending in ribbing that keeps the cuff settled at the wrist. The dropped armholes leave plenty of room for heavy base layers.
- Washing by hand. Submerge the knit in cool water with a mild soap and press the moisture out in a clean towel. Lay it flat on a drying rack to keep the heavy yarn from pulling the hem down.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
