We knit this cardigan in a heavy, textured gauge with plenty of built in stretch. The front buttons all the way up into a mock neck, or sits open as a loose layer. It hangs away from the torso, giving you ample room over tees and base knits.

What we would tell you in the studio
- Button mock collar. Fastening the front buttons pulls the neck into a high mock collar that stands on its own. Left unbuttoned, the collar folds back into a relaxed open front lapel.
- Chunky yarn gauge. The knit uses a thick, pliable yarn that holds its structure while yielding to movement. It gives the body weight without feeling stiff against bare skin.
- Roomy straight cut. We gave this piece dropped shoulders and a wide body that falls clear of the waistline toward the lower hip. Long sleeves finish in ribbed cuffs that stay pushed up.
- Hand wash care. Submerge in cool water with a mild knit wash and press the water out gently between clean towels. Lay flat to dry so the heavy ribs keep their original shape.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
