What we would tell you in the studio

  • Button placket neckline. The V-neckline fastens with four small buttons down the centre front. You can fasten them high toward the collarbone or undo two to leave the neck wider and more relaxed across the shoulders.
  • Top and short proportions. The top is cut broad and boxy, falling away from the torso to balance the shorter hem of the shorts. The waistband adjusts with a knitted drawstring so the shorts sit securely where you place them.
  • Two side pockets. We built working slit pockets directly into the side seams of the shorts. They sit flat against the hip when empty and hold small daily items without pulling the waist down.
  • Cotton yarn care. Machine wash the set on a gentle cycle with cold water or send it for dry cleaning. Lay both pieces flat on a towel to dry so the yarn holds its square shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
