What we would tell you in the studio

  • Button placket neckline. Four front buttons set the depth of the V-neckline. Fasten them to the top for a neat collar line, or unbutton the front so the collar falls wider across the chest.
  • Roomy top and hem. The top is cut broad through the body with short sleeves that drop off the shoulder. A cropped hem keeps the extra volume from bunching when worn over the matching shorts.
  • Drawstring short waistband. The shorts sit with an elasticated waistband threaded with a flat knit drawcord. Two inset side pockets sit flat along the seams without adding bulk to the hip.
  • Washing and yarn care. The cotton-rich yarn handles regular machine washing on a gentle cycle. Lay both pieces flat on a clean towel to dry so the knit retains its original shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
