A soft knit set worked in deep black yarn. We shaped the top with an open henley neckline and short sleeves, hanging loose through the body. The trousers pull on with an elastic drawstring waist and fall into a cropped wide leg cut. Both pieces share the same light, fluid drape.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Henley collar and buttons. The top opens at the neckline with a neat button placket. You can unbutton the neck down to a deeper V or leave it fastened. The collar band lies flat against the collarbone without rolling.
  • Cropped wide trousers. We gave the knit trousers an elastic waistband with an adjustable drawcord to sit where you prefer. The legs drop wide and straight, finishing above the ankle so the lower hem moves freely when you walk.
  • Smooth yarn hand. The knit fabric feels silky against bare skin and holds a soft, supple stretch throughout the day. It drapes away from the torso and legs rather than clinging, keeping the cut airy in warmer weather.
  • Washing and flat drying. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle in a mesh laundry bag to protect the knit surface and placket buttons. Lay both the top and the trousers flat on a towel to dry so the ribbed hems keep their shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
