Women's Flowy Casual Mini Dresses

We cut this mini dress in a clear orange hue, combining a stretchy smocked bodice with a straight, lined skirt. The open V-neckline is bordered with small ruffles, echoed by the flutter sleeves that flare away from the arm. It sits comfortably without clinging and falls to a short hem.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Bodice and neckline. The smocked upper body gathers with thin elastic threads to create generous mechanical stretch across the torso. We cut the neckline into an open V, finished with a narrow ruffle edge that holds its shape without pulling.
  • Flutter sleeve cut. The sleeves flare out from the shoulder seam with extra volume, falling loose around the upper arm. This open shape leaves the underarm free and lets air move through on warm days.
  • Lined skirt construction. Below the high waist seam, the skirt falls straight rather than flared. We built in a soft matching lining layer underneath the shell fabric to ensure the weave remains fully opaque in bright light.
  • Pockets and care. Two deep side pockets sit set into the side seams where they lay flat when empty. Machine wash the dress cold on a gentle cycle, then hang or lay flat to dry to protect the smocking elastic.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
