Women's Flowy Casual Mini Dresses

We constructed this mini dress in solid white with a smocked bodice and an open v-neckline. The flutter sleeves add volume up top while the straight-falling skirt finishes with side pockets. An integrated interior lining keeps the shell opaque under daylight.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • V-neck and smocking. The front opens into a shallow v-neck framed by soft ruffle edging. Below the collar, horizontal elastic smocking runs through the chest so the bodice flexes with movement before releasing at the high waist.
  • Flutter sleeve cut. We cut the short sleeves with a loose flutter shape that hangs away from the shoulder. The open underarm gives your arms full room to move without pulling at the chest smocking.
  • Lined white shell. Lightweight white fabrics can turn sheer under bright light, so we built a soft stretch lining directly inside the skirt. The double-layer construction keeps the dress opaque while maintaining a light, loose drape.
  • Care and maintenance. Machine wash cold inside out on a gentle cycle to protect the smocked thread work. Line dry or lay the piece flat in the shade to maintain the straight skirt hem and avoid fabric shrinkage.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
