What we would tell you in the studio

  • Neckline and sleeves. The open v-neck sits balanced above a fitted smocked chest. Flutter sleeves fall loose over the shoulders, giving the arms plenty of room to move without pulling at the neckline.
  • Bodice and skirt shape. Smocking across the bodice holds the upper body close before releasing into a straight, lined skirt. The cut keeps its shape without clinging to the legs, and deep side pockets are sewn into the seams.
  • Purple shade. The solid purple dye runs even across both the outer fabric and the inner lining. We dye this fabric in distinct lots so the color matches across the smocked panels, sleeves, and ruffled details.
  • Care and maintenance. Machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle to preserve the elastic thread in the smocked bodice. Lay the dress flat on a clean towel to dry so the short hem and flutter sleeves keep their press.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
