We knit this open-front cardigan with a relaxed body that hangs straight away from your clothes. The mid-weight yarn has a smooth hand that sits flat over tees and shirts. Dropped shoulders give the long sleeves room to layer without binding around the upper arm. Two open side pockets sit flat along the front.

What we would tell you in the studio
- Roomy drop cut. The body is cut wide with dropped armholes, letting the knit fall loosely without pulling across the shoulders or chest. It gives you space over thicker tops.
- Smooth yarn hand. We worked this in a soft mid-weight acrylic knit that offers steady warmth without heavy bulk indoors. The surface stays smooth against base layers.
- Two inset pockets. Two low side pockets sit right at hand level along the front panels. They lie flat against the knit when empty to keep the front line straight.
- Washing and care. Hand wash in cold water or use a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Reshape the damp piece and dry it flat on a towel to protect the knit length.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
