What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neck and cut. The top is cut roomy with a plain round neckline that sits flat at the collarbone. It drops straight through the torso and lands past the waist, giving you plenty of space through the body.
  • Wide-leg knit trousers. We built the bottoms with a broad elastic waistband that pulls on easily without extra hardware. The legs fall straight and wide to the floor, balancing the looser proportions of the top.
  • Contrast edge detailing. Fine contrast piping runs down the outer leg seams and edges the hems on both pieces. It outlines the shape of the knit without adding bulk or stiffness to the drape.
  • Cold wash care. Hand washing in cold water protects the soft yarn structure best. If you use a machine, select a delicate cycle with mild soap and lay both pieces flat on a rack to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
