We knit this two piece set in deep black yarn so both halves share the same hand and weight. The top sits away from the torso with a plain crew neckline, while the trousers pull on with an adjustable drawstring waist. Deep pockets sit at the sides of the trousers for small items.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neckline and sleeves. The top features a neat crewneck band that lies flat against the collarbone. Long sleeves finish in a light rib that keeps the cuffs in place when pushed up the forearm.
  • Drawstring waist and pockets. We built the trousers with a wide knitted waistband threaded with an adjustable cord. Deep side pockets are set into the seams to hold a phone without pulling down the waistband.
  • Roomy drape and line. Both pieces cut loose from the body. The top hem drops to the hip, while the trousers fall straight from the seat down to the ankles without clinging.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash cold inside out on a gentle cycle to protect the surface of the black yarn. Lay both the top and trousers flat across a drying rack away from direct heat.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
