What we would tell you in the studio
- Roomy coat cut. The body hangs away from the waist and falls toward the knee without buttons or closures. It layers cleanly over heavy turtlenecks, shirts, or knit dresses without bunching under the arms.
- Folded neck and pockets. A broad shawl collar turns back along the lapel to build extra thickness around the neck. We set two deep patch pockets into the lower front panels to keep hands out of the wind.
- Long straight sleeve. The sleeves run straight down the arm to a plain knit cuff that pushes up easily. The armhole is cut wide so you can wear thick winter layers underneath without pulling at the shoulder seams.
- Cold water care. Dry cleaning preserves the dense surface best, but you can also hand wash it in cold water with mild detergent. Reshape the damp coat and dry it flat on a towel so the weight does not pull the hem.

Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
