What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neck cut. The neckline sits as a classic crew with a narrow band that stays flat against the collarbone. It keeps the upper chest covered while leaving the arms free.
  • Fine gauge knit. We chose a lightweight, dense stitch with generous recovery. The yarn stretches easily over the body and pulls back into shape without bagging out at the seat.
  • Short hem finish. The straight hem lands well above the knee. We finished the lower edge with a clean, low-profile stitch that lies flat without rolling or adding bulk.
  • Care and washing. Machine wash in cold water using a mesh laundry bag to protect the fine surface from snagging. Lay the dress flat on a towel to dry so the length stays true.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
