What we would tell you in the studio

  • Paperbag waist design. Front gathers rise slightly above the waistband, held by a removable self-tie belt. The elastic section across the back gives stretch while keeping the front profile clean under tucked knit tops or fine sweaters.
  • Pleated wide leg. Tucks along the front waistband open into a generous, straight fall down the leg. The fabric drops straight from the hip to the hem without clinging to the knee, giving the trouser a relaxed, airy drape.
  • Side seam pockets. Deep pockets are set into each side seam to hold small items without adding bulk to the hip. The pocket bags stay flat against the leg when you walk.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash in cold water using a laundry mesh bag to protect the gathers and belt loops. Tumble dry on a low heat setting, or hang the trousers by the waistband to preserve the front pleat lines.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
