What we would tell you in the studio

  • Waistband and pleats. Front pleats feed directly into the wide leg. The elasticated back section keeps the high rise anchored, while the self-fabric belt threads through loops to cinch the paperbag ruffle.
  • Wide leg drape. The fabric carries enough weight to hold its shape through the leg without creasing through the day. It falls loose around the ankle, giving plenty of room through the thigh and calf.
  • Inseam pockets. Two deep pockets are set straight into the side seams. They sit flat against the hip when empty and stay hidden beneath the volume of the front pleating.
  • Care and washing. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, preferably inside a mesh laundry bag. Lay the trousers flat to dry or run on low tumble heat to preserve the waistband elastic.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
