What we would tell you in the studio

  • Paperbag waist construction. The high paperbag waistband gathers slightly at the top edge. We built elastic through the back half so it holds its place without pulling, and added belt loops for the matching tie belt.
  • Front pleats and leg line. Deep pleats at the front waist release into a wide, straight leg. The cut hangs clear of the leg from the hip downward, giving the woven fabric room to drape cleanly as you walk.
  • Side pocket details. Two inset pockets sit along the side seams for small items. They are stitched to lie flat against the hip line so the front pleating keeps its shape.
  • Charcoal wash and care. Wash cold in a mesh laundry bag to keep the belt loops and pleat edges intact. Lay flat to dry or run on a low cycle, then press with a warm iron if needed.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
