We cut these trousers with a wide, straight leg and deep front pleats that give the fabric room to drape. The high paperbag waist gathers slightly over an elasticated back band. It comes with a matching tie belt and deep side pockets. In light grey, the weave shows its crisp texture clearly.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Paperbag waist build. The gathered paperbag waist sits high, supported by a wide elastic band across the back. It pulls on easily and stays put, while the matching removable tie belt lets you adjust the hold at the front.
  • Wide pleated leg. Deep pleats below the waistband open into a generous, straight leg. The cut hangs entirely clear of the body from the hip down, giving the fabric a clean vertical drop as you walk.
  • Side pocket construction. Two deep slash pockets sit along the side seams. We lined them flat so they sit flush against the hip without breaking the line of the pleats or adding bulk under the tie belt.
  • Care and maintenance. Machine wash on a cold cycle using a mesh laundry bag to protect the belt loops and waistband. Lay the trousers flat to dry or tumble dry on low heat to keep the fabric smooth.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
