2 Piece Striped Sweater Lounge Sets for Women

We knit this two-piece set in a soft horizontal stripe, pairing a crewneck top with wide-leg trousers. The pullover has dropped batwing sleeves and a hem that hits around the hip. The trousers pull on with an elastic waistband and fall straight to the shoe. Both pieces share the same knit gauge and yarn weight.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crewneck and batwing cut. The top features a simple round crew neckline that lies flat against the collarbone. Low-set batwing armholes give the long sleeves extra room through the shoulders and upper arms, tapering slightly toward the cuff.
  • Wide-leg trouser shape. We knit the pants with an elastic waist that sits high on the midsection. The legs drop straight and loose from the hip down to the floor, giving the knit plenty of space to swing as you walk.
  • Striped yarn gauge. Knitted with added give, the mid-weight yarn keeps its shape while hanging away from the skin. The black and white horizontal stripe is worked directly into the knit structure so the tension stays consistent across both pieces.
  • Laundering and care. Hand wash or machine wash on a cold, gentle cycle inside out. Lay both pieces flat on a drying rack to protect the knit trousers from stretching out lengthwise. Fold rather than hang to maintain the original shoulder line.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
