What we would tell you in the studio

  • High stand collar. The neckline rises into a neat mock collar that rests close to the base of the throat. It holds its shape without folding over or pressing tightly.
  • Straight trouser cut. The pants fall wide and straight from the hips down to the hem. We added an adjustable drawcord at the waist band and deep side pockets that sit flat.
  • Fine gauge knit. We selected a smooth yarn blend that gives the set a soft, fluid hand against bare skin. The knit has enough weight to drop cleanly without clinging.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash cold inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the knit surface from snagging. Tumble dry on a low setting, or lay both pieces flat to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
